Lovely new review
"Sunday afternoon in the Vic, music fans, and thanks to a broken down Southeastern train I missed the first 20 minutes of Clare Free’s set, which was annoying, as if it was as good as the rest of it it must have been 20 minutes not to miss...
Clare was last at the Vic last year, and by all accounts has been pretty busy ever since if her FB posts are anything to go by. It seems the word is well and truly out and she’s in demand all over the place.
With just a guitar and a voice that can sound one minute like an angel and the next like a Louisiana Madam the tunes flowed effortlessly across the pub, the self-penned numbers sitting alongside familiar standards and sounding just as good. No - better for coming direct from the heart.
Butterflies gave me, well, butterflies, and Funky Kitchen Momma Blues kicked badass (can I say that? Is that a thing or have I just made it up trying to sound “street”?), and her version of Hound Dog was as good as any I’ve heard.
She can write songs as good as anyone - Tommy (you had to be there...) would have loved Vagabond Sanctuary as much as we did... And at this point I have to disagree with Clare: after that particular song she said “You can’t sing while you’re crying”, but she constantly disproved that. The best blues is by definition singing while you’re crying. And Clare Free sings the best blues." - By P.Christmas
